Toyota is recalling new Prius vehicles in the U.S. for a potential problem with the parking brake. Recall affects 92,000 vehicles in the U.S.
The Problem: Toyota says the parking brake could become inoperative on certain 2016 and 2017 model-year Prius hybrids. Because of the parking brake issue, the vehicle could roll away if the driver exits the vehicle while the ignition is on and the "Park" gear is not activated.
The Fix: Toyota will install clips on the top of the brake cable dust boots to prevent a cable from becoming inoperative, fixing the issue. The automaker will begin notifying owners of the recall via snail mail in November.
Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall involves 92,000 vehicles in the U.S., including 2016 and 2017 Toyota Prius cars. In Japan, around 210,000 Toyota Prius vehicles are affected. More Priuses will be recalled in other regions around the world including Europe and Australia, reports Reuters.
Just last month, Toyota announced it would recall 7,600 Prius vehicles in the U.S. for an airbag issue. A component inside the front passenger airbag of these vehicles may be improperly assembled. "If this occurs, the stored gas may escape without a deployment signal and result in the partial inflation of the air bag," Toyota said at the time. Toyota will also begin notifying owners of this recall in November.
